The present data was collected during a day field trip to Mongolwe and Chikala Hills Forest Reserves in Machinga on 12 August 2005 by I.H. Patel, P.H. Nansomgole and A.K. Manana. This area is located North East of Mongolwe Hill slopes, along Likwenu River which marks the boundary between Mpango Village and T.A. Stola area.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 6 records. 1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

  • Event (core)
    6
  • Occurrence
    197

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Downloads

Download the latest version of this resource data as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A) or the resource metadata as EML or RTF:

Project Data

The African Biodiversity Challenge is a competition coordinated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation. The competition follows on from a previous JRS-funded project, “Mobilising Policy and Decision-making Relevant Biodiversity Data”, which culminated in the Africa Rising conference in 2015, and supports on-going efforts to further enhance the Biodiversity Information Management activities of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Africa network.

Title Enhancing accessibility of biodiversity data in Malawi
Identifier African Biodiversity Challenge 2018
Funding JRS Biodiversity Foundation
Study Area Description This project is taking place in Malawi. Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, is defined by its topography of highlands split by the Great Rift Valley and Lake Malawi.
Design Description Data is being mobilised by three institutions; Museums of Malawi (MOM,National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens (NHBG),Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) while National Commission for Science and Technology is hosting the IPT. The goal of the project is to facilitate access to biodiversity data information held by the Museums. Biodiversity data made available on a national Data platform – the platform will be accessible through both the government Museum website and the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) website.

Sampling Methods

A 25m was laid to measure the size of a quadrat of 10x10m. Elevation and cordinates were recorded at the center of each quadrat in order to have average readings for the entire quadrat. The same string was used to measure a distance of 100m between quadrats(interval). Species observations were made in 6 quadrats.

Study Extent This study took place in Southern Region of Malawi specifically in Machinga district between Mongolwe and Chikala Forest Reserve in Machinga
Quality Control none

Method step description:

  1. Repeatability can be done by tracing quadrat 1 with a hand held GPS and trace the remainder of the quadrats using track point while maintaining a 100m distance between quadrats

Additional Metadata

Purpose The purpose of this investigation was to document species and GPS coordinates for this area to be used in digitization exercise of the area
