ABC Mungolwe Hills, Machinga Sampling Event data
Latest version published by National Herbarium & Botanic Gardens of Malawi on May 31, 2022
This dataset was generated from a day field trip to Mungolwe Hills, Machinga by National Herbarium & Botanic Gardens technical team to carry out plot sampling on these hills. The Hills are located opposite Malosa Mountain Forest reserve alon the road to Liwonde, Machinga.
Plot sampling was done along a defined transect on the hills using 10X10 plot size with a distance of 50m between plots. A 10X10m plot was chosen because of the difficult terrain in these mountains. The standard plot size is usually 50X50m. For each plot, the coordinates, altitude and the plant species present were recorded.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 8 records. 1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
- Event (core)
- Occurrence
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Downloads

Project Data
The African Biodiversity Challenge is a competition coordinated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation. The competition follows on from a previous JRS-funded project, “Mobilising Policy and Decision-making Relevant Biodiversity Data”, which culminated in the Africa Rising conference in 2015, and supports on-going efforts to further enhance the Biodiversity Information Management activities of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Africa network.

Sampling Methods
A single transect was laid from the riverine forest area using a campus which assisted with directions of the transect. 10m by 10m quadrats were laid out along the transect at a distance of 50m between each transect. In each plot, coordinates and altitude were captured using a hand held GPS. This was done at the middle of each plot. In addition, plant species present within the quadrat were recorded.
Study Extent | The study was carried out at Mungolwe hills, Machinga |

Method step description:
- A 10X10m quadrat was used as a standard quadrat in this exercise.
Additional Metadata
Purpose | This data was collected as part of the day to day work for National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens of Malawi. There were a series of field trips to this area in 2005 and some are still existing as raw data. This data will be made available later as this process of publishing will be incorporated in our day to day activities. |
