Latest version published by National Herbarium & Botanic Gardens of Malawi on May 31, 2022 National Herbarium & Botanic Gardens of Malawi

The present dataset was generated under the Nyika Plant Diversity Project funded by NORAD which was aimed at enhancing capacity of Malawi as a SADC member state at conservation issues inorder to implement the Convetion on Biological Diversity. The project goal was to develop a concept for conservation, sustainable management and utilisation of the biological diversity of the Nyika National Park.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 51 records. 1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

  • Event (core)
    51
  • Occurrence
    1148

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

The African Biodiversity Challenge is a competition coordinated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation. The competition follows on from a previous JRS-funded project, “Mobilising Policy and Decision-making Relevant Biodiversity Data”, which culminated in the Africa Rising conference in 2015, and supports on-going efforts to further enhance the Biodiversity Information Management activities of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Africa network.

Sampling Methods

A 50meter measuring tape and string were during the survey. These were used for measuring the size of each quadrat. A hand held campus was used for proper positioning of the quadrats. Two transect walks were done each originating from Thazima gate one to the northen direction and the second one to the eastern direction

Study Extent This investigation was carried out at Nyika National Parl, Northern Malawi.
Quality Control None

Method step description:

  1. Quadrats Measuring 25 x 25m were laid along each transect with an interval of 125m between each quadrat. In each quadrat, plant species present were recorded. The dominant tree species were also recorded. The Georeferences and elevation readings for each quadrat was captured using a GPS.
