ABC Useful Plants of Malawi: Economical & Commercial
Latest version published by National Herbarium & Botanic Gardens of Malawi on May 31, 2022
The dataset contains indigenous plants that are used commercially in Malawi and have commercial values. The economic importance of these species have been documented in several published and unpublished papers in Malawi. Although these species are not documented in the Malawian Red Data List, their wide use in the commercial companies in Malawi warrant their evaluation. The current list consists of only 4 species among many which require to be evaluated as they may be under great threat. These specimens were collected by different botanists throughout the country on general collection trips and deposited at the National Herbarium and Botanical Gardens of Malawi. Please note that the present dataset does not represent the entire geographical range of the species because some have no coordinates. In recent years, NHBG has done more taxon sampling but these haven’t been digitized fully as the digitization process only began in 2017. The number of collections can be estimated at above 3000.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 70 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data
The African Biodiversity Challenge is a competition coordinated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation. The competition follows on from a previous JRS-funded project, “Mobilising Policy and Decision-making Relevant Biodiversity Data”, which culminated in the Africa Rising conference in 2015, and supports on-going efforts to further enhance the Biodiversity Information Management activities of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Africa network. This project also aligns with SANBI’s Regional Engagement Strategy, and endeavours to strengthen both emerging biodiversity informatics networks and data management capacity on the continent in support of sustainable development. The project obnjective is to Facilitate easy access to biodiversity data information held by the Museums.

Sampling Methods
The datasets are being mobilised and entered in BRAHMS database and extracted from there for publishing. Most data on occurence and checklists are in mobilized from Library archives and are entered into DwC templates and published thereafter.
Study Extent | This work will only publish data from Malawi |
---|---|
Quality Control | Quality control is done using web based programs eg OpenRefine |
Method step description:
- This data can be retrieved from the BRAHMS database at MAL when needed.
Additional Metadata
Purpose | The dataset ids part of the African Biodiversity Challenge project whose aim is to mobise data for scientific work. Furthermore, the dataset will help with evaluation of these species using IUCN red list categories in Malawi which is currently an ongoing process. |
