Última versión Publicado por Malawi Plant Genetic Resources Centre (MPGRC) en Jun 3, 2025 Malawi Plant Genetic Resources Centre (MPGRC)

Status and spatial diversity of sorghum wild species project is supported by the European Union through Global Biodiversity Information Facility(GBIF) and Biodiversity Information for Development(BID).The project has a goal of generating data about crop wild relatives of sorghum that occur in Malawi for research and sustainable conservation purposes. Sorghum wild species occurrence data documented and published through this project is an overview of Sorghum crop wild species occurring in Malawi. The Malawi Plant Genetic Resources Centre leads the project in collaboration with University of Birmingham, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens of Malawi and National Commission for Science and Technology.

Cobertura Geográfica

For this data set, Wild sorghum species observations were made in the Central and Southern Region of Malawi.

Coordenadas límite Latitud Mínima Longitud Mínima [-17.12, 34.332], Latitud Máxima Longitud Máxima [-13.603, 35.87]

Cobertura Taxonómica

Occurrence data reported here is classified to species and sub species levels only.

Especie  Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (Sorghum),  Sorghum versicolor (Sorghum),  Sorghum halepense (Sorghum),  Sorghum sudanensis (Sorghum)
Subespecie  Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench subspecies. arundinaceum (Sorghum),  Sorghum bicolor subsp. verticilliflorum (Sorghum)

Datos del Proyecto

Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench is an important food crop in Malawi. Online data reveals occurrence of its four crop wild relatives including S.versicolor Anderson, S. halepense (L.) Pers, S. sudanense (Piper) Stapf and S. arundinaceum. Some of these contain traits that confer resistance to Striga asiatica L. Kuntze and possibly have genes for tolerance to other biotic and abiotic stresses. However, their status and spatial diversity has not been established. This project aims at halting genetic erosion and safeguard the species for present and future use and specifically, to (i) establish the distribution of S.versicolor Anderson, S. halepense (L.) Pers, S. sudanense (Piper) Stapf and S. arundinaceum in Malawi; (ii) establish the spatial diversity of the crop wild relative (iii) assess the state of vulnerability of the species ;(iv) Develop and propose conservation plan to safeguard threatened species . Malawi Plant Genetic Resources Centre leads the project in collaboration with National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens of Malawi, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and National Commission of Science and Technology and the University of Birmingham. The project will generate information about the current in situ status, distribution and spatial diversity of these species. This information will guide in designing an effective and sustainable conservation plan that will guide policy makers. Data from this will help in periodic monitoring of their status in their habitat as well as to complement the existing data hence improve knowledge base of the species. There will be increased accessibility of Sorghum CWR data for research globally.

Métodos de Muestreo

Field sampling was guided by Eco geographical surveys, past field observations and experts knowledge which revealed areas where the wild sorghum species occurred across Malawi.

Área de Estudio The project was implemented in Malawi and the data reported in this project cuts across the country. It should be noted that this first data set covers only three regions thus; Central, South and Eastern regions.
Control de Calidad Data set published in this was cleaned with a number of tools. Coordinates of the occurrence sites were mapped using google earth to ensure that ensure that all coordinates are falling within the target area. Data points were plotted on the map of Malawi to ensure that only points falling within Malawi are reported.

Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:

  1. Images of sorghum wild species were captured with I phones and Cameras and passport information was digitized. For the field observation, samples of the specimen were collected together with associated data. The project team ensured that all the data points were Geo referenced according to the standards. Scientific names were crosschecked with those of accepted ones.

Metadatos Adicionales

Propósito The purpose of this project was to increase information availability about the occurrence of wild sorghum species in Malawi and share this information for sustainable conservation and research.
Descripción de mantenimiento This data set will be updated whenever information about sorghum wild species is available.
